Do you have a child like Isabel?

Do you have a child like Ryan?

Isabel attends class. She seems engaged. She occasionally asks questions. She turns in homework. She has even stayed after school to participate in a study group. Yet, her teachers noticed that she continues to struggle with her class work. Moreover, they don't see a noticeable difference in her scores from last year to this year.

Why isn't Isabel learning? Read about our Transition Program.

Ryan doesn't seem particularly engaged in his work.  He would rather doodle or sketch.  It seems to take him forever to get going on his work - even with a lot of prompting.  Teachers are noticing that he is becoming more withdrawn in both academic and social activities.   It has become a huge chore to get him to study or to do homework.   He has slipped two years behind his peers in reading and math.

Why isn't Ryan learning?  Read about our Comprehensive Program.

Calgary Academy provides specialized educational programs for a spectrum of intellectually capable students who learn differently as well as for students who are not meeting their capabilities. While Calgary Academy was initially established to teach students with learning differences, we now offer two distinct programs. Students applying for either program must have a good social and behavioral history. The primary goals of both programs are to:

  • maximize each student’s academic performance
  • teach independent work habits and to develop transferable skills
  • improve pro-social and self-advocacy skills
  • improve self-confidence and self-esteem

Calgary Academy’s Comprehensive Program, offered from Grades 2 through 12, is for is designed for students who have average to above average intellectual ability but who have significant difficulty with reading, written language or math. In each comprehensive classroom there are a minimum of two instructors and a maximum of 16 students.

Calgary Academy’s Transition Program, offered from Grades 5 through 12, is for students at or above grade level academically who require further development of the skills necessary for becoming independent as a learner. In the Transition Program there is a student to teacher ratio of 16:1.

Candidates for either program most often exhibit one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Attention difficulties that affect the ability to stay on task
  • Low self-esteem and confidence
  • Difficulty completing and handing in homework and projects
  • Difficulty with tasks that require organizational, planning, time-management or study skills

In addition to the prescribed Alberta curriculum, Calgary Academy offers a variety of fine arts programs. In fine arts, Calgary Academy students have the opportunity for hands-on learning in art, music, drama, Spanish and digital media studies. Also, our physical education and sports programs offer all students an equal opportunity for active participation, regardless of athletic ability.

For many students entering Calgary Academy, school is synonymous with frustration and failure. At Calgary Academy, our entire faculty is committed to a school culture that provides every student with the range of supports necessary to succeed academically and socially, while enjoying their learning experience.

Since all of our students will ultimately integrate into other settings, our challenge is to ensure that they have acquired the skills necessary to be successful as students and as productive, contributing members of society.
